Ventilatory Threshold Testing with ZoneX by PAIRFS
During my training sessions, I’m always looking to optimize my performance and better understand my physical limits—to get more enjoyment on the bike and improve my health. A few weeks ago, while on a Nordic skiing trip in Norway, my friend and coach Olivier told me about a Grenoble-based startup, PAIRFS, which launched a new product called ZoneX. This easy-to-use portable device accurately measures the ventilatory thresholds SV1 and SV2, which are essential for determining one’s training zones (à la Coggan). According to its creators, it’s an ideal alternative to the lactate test.
I had already done ventilatory tests in a lab, but hadn’t repeated them—mainly because it required going to a hospital, which is neither convenient nor quick. On top of that, the recommendations I received didn’t really help define my training zones.
Back in France, I contacted Pierre Jallon, the CEO of PAIRFS, to offer to test the product. He agreed immediately, eager to get detailed feedback on the test. After a quick presentation of the device and software, I tested ZoneX on my home trainer. It was as simple as doing a test on Strava—with a small device worn on the face.
A smooth, non-invasive experience
The ventilatory threshold test with ZoneX is much less invasive than the lactate test, which requires multiple blood samples during exercise. The ventilatory test involves no needle pricks, no pain, and no discomfort. I could fully focus on my effort without being distracted.
The test lasts about 20 minutes, including the warm-up.
What really impressed me was the ability to get real-time data. During the test, the device measures my ventilation and CO₂ production. This instant feedback allows me to precisely monitor my physiological responses, helping me understand how my body reacts at each intensity level.
A better understanding of my physical capacities
The test helped me clearly identify my aerobic and anaerobic capacities, as well as pinpoint my SV1 and SV2 transition thresholds. These data are essential for adapting my training plan, defining my power and heart rate zones, and estimating how long I can sustain each effort level.
Instead of simply waiting for fatigue to set in, I now have a clear picture of when my body begins to accumulate metabolic byproducts. Thanks to this test, I was able to easily adjust my workouts to improve performance and manage my energy more effectively—whether during long rides with friends or competitive granfondos.
Why this test convinced me
What truly convinced me is how accurately this test reflects my aerobic and anaerobic performance. It provides a complete and meaningful picture of my physical capacities—far more precise than a lactate test. It helps me structure my training better, optimize my effort, and maximize my long-term results.
ZoneX is a real breakthrough for anyone seeking to understand their physical thresholds accurately and non-invasively. Thanks to this test, I can now train my body more intelligently and effectively.
