How is the PAIRFS technology used in ZoneX and BikeX validated?
The technology was validated in a clinical study conducted with the Grenoble University Hospital. This article details the principle and methodology.
A technology for measuring ventilatory thresholds
PAIRFS' first products are designed for sports professionals and athletes and allow for the measurement of ventilatory thresholds. The objective of the measurement is to determine the exercise intensities to which these thresholds correspond.

These key intensities then allow for the creation of highly effective training plans. In their 2015 article, Wolpern et al. [ ref ] show that with the same 3-month training plan, athletes who use ventilatory thresholds to determine effort intensities progress 2.2 times faster than those who use the cardiac reserve method.
ZoneX and BikeX are the only simple, reliable and accessible solutions that offer this type of gain.
How are the thresholds measured?
Training zone measurements are performed according to Wasserman 's method and Anselmi 's article . Thresholds are measured by detecting variations in two respiratory parameters:
VE: minute ventilation (L/min)
VE/VCO₂: ventilatory equivalent for CO₂


To measure the thresholds, it is therefore sufficient to ensure that the variations in ventilation and CO2 in the exhaled air are indeed proportional to those of the reference machines.
Procedure for a validation test
During a validation test, the guinea pig wears both gas exchange analysis systems:
The university hospital system (the white tube that comes out)
The PAIRFS system
And sensors used for stress testing: ECG, blood pressure monitor...

The reliability analysis is performed as follows:
The signals from both systems are synchronized based on the respiratory rhythm

The scaled ventilation and CO2 signals are then compared.


The results
Twenty people performed the stress test during the clinical trial. Both systems consistently showed a correlation as described above, with slope breaks occurring at the same location.
This study demonstrates that PAIRFS technology works as well as reference systems for determining ventilatory thresholds.
